The newest release in a franchise of golf games that began in Japan in 1997 with "Everybody's Golf" for the original PlayStation, "Hot Shots Golf Fore!" continues the tradition of delivering an accessible yet surprisingly deep golf game, plus adds support for online multiplayer matches.
The new "Hot Shots" also includes the miniputt mode that proved popular in the original "Hot Shots Golf." It's perfect for kids or kids at heart who don't have time to play a full 18hole round.
At the start of the game, you have only four golfers to choose from, but unlocking additional characters, caddies and courses is part of the fun of winning rounds.
If you prefer playing against your friends instead of the game's artificial intelligence, you can play with as many as three other people on the same TV screen. Or if you own the PS2 Network Adapter (sold separately), you can find players by logging onto the game's Internet site. The online play is very smooth when using a highspeed cable modem. From the main lobby screen, you can choose between regular multiplayer games or lengthier tournaments.
"Hot Shots Golf Fore!" successfully balances accessibility and depth, and manages to add a host of new features while staying true to what's made its franchise so popular. It's a highly recommended pick for PS2 owners looking for fun on the fairway.
Don't be fooled by the game's cartoonlike graphics. At the heart of what looks like a kid's title is a deep simulation that can be quite difficult on tougher courses. To play well, you'll need to pay attention to details such as wind direction, course topography, club selection and ball spin.
Who needs Tiger Woods when you can play golf as a female ninja with a dog as a caddy?
Rather than adopt the currently popular "analog" swing mechanism, in which players push the controller's analog stick to swing the club, "Hot Shots Golf Fore!" relies on the classic threebutton method for driving and chipping the ball: one for pulling the club back, a second to choose the amount of power needed for the shot and a third to strike the ball.
In total, there are 34 game characters and their respective caddies, including a cheerleader, surfer and balding middleaged suburbanite. Seasoned gamers should recognize cameos by other Sony video game characters, including Ratchet and Clank and Jak and Daxter, complete with their familiar animations and voices.
Points are awarded for successfully completing each of the 15 courses (five of which are from "Hot Shots Golf 3"). You can then use your points in the golf store to buy virtual clothes, clubs and other extras for your golfer.
锘? a swinging good time
"Hot Shots Golf Fore!" for the Sony PlayStation 2 may not have the star power of EA Sports' "Tiger Woods PGA Tour" series, but when it comes to fun, "Hot Shots" hits a hole in one.
Similar to past games in the series, putting is also a breeze thanks to its intuitive control scheme and clean interface.
