Now, the service is expanding from its beginnings on PCs and Macs to your TV with the OnLive Game System. To celebrate the new console rollout, we decided to look at five things that you might want to know about the next big thing in gaming.
2 You can play your games pretty much anywhere There a certain undeniable cool in being able to instantly start a game while sitting in front of your TV, then pausing it to go brush your teeth and continuing your game on your laptop in bed or on your work, er, buddy PC. It pretty fair to say that this level of portability is a whole new world. Yes, you could also say that it just the next logical step in a cloudcomputing world and you be right. But really? It hard to be that blas about the whole thing the first time you get kicked off the TV so your gal can watch So You Think You Can Dance, and pick up where you left off on the kitchen table.

锘? Things You Didn't Know
When OnLive launched last summer, it looked to change the way we game now and into the future. The company takes the cloudcomputing model into the gamespace, moving the games themselves off your PC or console, and onto a bank of monster servers in one of several dedicated data centers. This not only frees game producers from the dangers of piracy, but it also frees the user (which would be you) from the neverending cycle of upgrading your gadgets.
1 You don need a hot machine to run it OnLive essentially treats your TV, Mac or PC like an oldschool dumb terminal, streaming the action to your screen while the game chugs away on a server in Santa Clara or wherever is the closest OnLive server farm. But does the cloudcomputing model work as well for games as it does for loweroctane stuff like wordprocessing and databasing? By and large, it seems to work pretty nicely, and OnLive ongoing expansion makes the future look pretty good for cloudenthusiasts. Oh, and playing Borderlands on your old MacBook? Pure win.
3 Some of your favorite games are on OnLive Over 20 game publishers have already partnered with OnLive to get their games onto your screen, and some of them are big: Ubisoft, Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment, Square Enix, Eidos, SEGA, and TakeTwo are all heavily represented on the OnLive games list. With publishers like that on board, it probably reasonable to expect a ton of fun to be coming down the pipe. OnLive is also working to make it easy for indie game developers to get their wares onto its gaming cloud, which shortcircuits the whole issue of crossplatform support for small game developers. Translation: Look for cool, edgy games soon.
