THQ flirted with an annual release schedule for mixed martial arts game UFC Undisputed before reportedly backing down. Meanwhile, a more recent franchise taking this route is Assassin's Creed. With Assassin's Creed II and Assassin's Creed Brotherhood launching in 2009 and 2010 respectively, MTV Multiplayer reported earlier this week that another title is in the works for 2011.
Could Rockstar franchises Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead receive the Call of Duty treatment and become annual properties that crank out games every year?
The trend of turning hot franchises into yearly game releases has grown very popular over the last couple years. Activision greets players with a fresh Guitar Hero and Call of Duty every year, while Electronic Arts has its stable of sports franchise and racing series Need For Speed.
Recent releases from both franchises have relied heavily on downloadable content to maintain players' interest. For 2008's Grand Theft Auto IV, Rockstar released two substantial downloadable episodes. As for Red Dead Redemption arguably this year's best game the studio has launched several DLC packs aimed at enhancing the singleplayer and multiplayer components.
