But the AFL have the money and are prepared to spend it. The expansion of the competition to 18 teams has helped grow the broadcast rights to a massive $1.25 billion over five years.
"The second team is a good thing for the existing team and what it does is forces the established team to compete," Demetriou said.
The Giants are the eighth team to establish themselves outside Victoria. They are also its most expensive, with establishment costs estimated to be around $200 million over the next six years.
"Both the Swans in Sydney and the Lions in Brisbane are in market places where they were getting swamped.
"I think we just need to play with spirit to attract people from western Sydney. People in western Sydney that I've known since I've been living here over the last couple of years or so I've really got to enjoy their humour," Sheedy said.
Demetriou, though, sees it as a win for both teams.
"One of the main reasons for the expansion into western Sydney is to support the Swans.

The arrival of the AFL's 18th team completes an expansion of the game which started when the code's former incarnation, the Victorian Football League, sent the South Melbourne Swans to Sydney 30 years ago.
Chief executive Andrew Demetriou said the league's move into western Sydney wasn't an "invasion" and there was room for all the football codes.
It's also clear from Adam Goodes' comments the Swans aren't rolling out the welcome mat for their crosstown rivals.
"They're knockabouts, they've got a good work ethic. We're picking that style of player that actually suits this area."
Hopes are high for a crowd close to 40,000. Optimists among the AFL fraternity are hoping for a record for a new club. The mark is currently held by the Adelaide Crows, who drew 44,902 to their first game in the AFL back in 1991.
"They have more clubs to compete against in more sports, more events, more State of Origin games, more internationals, more Super 15 games, the ALeague expanding and the cricket season going longer."
The AFL held their season launch for the first time outside Melbourne when they gathered at Sydney Town Hall on Thursday night.
