As part of the initiative, the University of Adelaide, UniSA and Flinders University will participate in an eightyear, $35 million Australian Solar Thermal Research Initiative.
锘?3m for solar research funding project between Australia and the United States
Led by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), three other Australian universities will also serve as partners, along with the United States Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Sandia Corporation, and Arizona State University.
University of Adelaide centre for energy technology director Professor Gus Nathan said solar energy was one of the fastest growing forms of energy technology.
The new funding would lead to worldfirst technological advances in solar energy and pave the way to commercialising the industry in Australia, Mr Ferguson said.
Through the Federal Government's Australian Solar Institute, the vast bulk of funding will go towards two eightyear programs to develop the next generation of photovoltaic cells and solar power technologies.
"A worldclass collaboration of this scale ensures we are well on our way to lower the cost of solar thermal technology," CSIRO energy transformed flagship director Dr Alex Wonhas said.
Energy Minister Martin Ferguson yesterday announced more than $83 million for solar research funding as part of a collaborative effort between Australia and the United States.
The initiative aims to lower the cost of solar thermal power from 25c to about 10c a kilowatt hour.
