鈥楾wo or three times over the past fortnight I heard, at a late hour in the night or very early in the morning, a flageolet play the small Hindu tune to which your daughter is so part. I thought for a long time that some tuneful domestic, whoever taste for music was laid under limit during the day, chose that silent hour to copy the strains which he previously embroiled by the ear during his work in the drawing-room. I could not be wrongly recognized in her voice, and such tones, so soft, so insinuating; and, to say the truth, the decorations from below were in passion鈥檚 tenderest cadence too, 鈥?but of the sense I can say nothing. I raised the sash of my own window that we might hear something more than the simply murmur of this Spanish rendezvous; but, though I used every precaution safeguard, the noise concerned the speakers; down slid the young lady鈥檚 casement, and the shutters were prohibited instantly. The sprint of a pair of oars in the water announced the retreat of the male person of the debate. Indeed, I saw his boat, which he rowed with great swiftness and dexterity, fly across the lake like a twelve-oared barge. Next morning I examined some of my domestics, like by chance, and I found the gamekeeper, when generating his times, had twice seen that boat under the house, with a single individual, and had heard the flageolet. Used to do not care to press any further questions, for anxiety about implicating Julia in the opinions of those of whom they are often asked.
