My mom bought her shoes as well that lasted for a long time, and cost under http://www.asicsrunningshoes.eu $15, and that was at JCPenney. So we don't prefer to spend a ton for a pair of shoes.

We buy slippers at Old Navy for my daughter.
We don't buy her too many shoes, since she doesn't wear them too often (we're home most of the time, so there's no need).

I do but we're an unsual circumstance. Odd wears a leg brace and would much prefer (as would Mommy) to wear "pretty shoes" than just the orthopedic shoes or running shoes all the time (she's 8). In our experience, the cheaper shoes simply can't hold up to the additional wear and tear of a hard plastic brace being pushed in and out of the shoe multiple times a day the way a sturdier leather shoe can. In particular, we have found that the European brands withstand the lifespan of each brace the best (6+ months or so). Unfortunately we have to buy TWO pairs to make a set for her. That can be pretty expensive, but she has a lot of challenges in her life, and if "pretty shoes" can help ease that burden, I'm willing to shop sales like crazy, and scrimp and sacrifice other places in our budget. I've had such great luck with some of these brands like Umi or Primigi, I'm partial to them so with ydd, I still prefer them. However, she is MUCH easier to fit, so I scour places like the big Amazon shoe sale and can buy ahead for her and get things like Primigi mary janes for $22, marked down from $68. I can't do that with odd though because each brace is custom made and we probably try on a dozen shoes for every pair we buy. Also, since her feet are growing so fast, we try not to buy too many shoes, if we can help it, because one day she can wear them, and the next, she can't.
