Despite having driven his car more than 38,000 kilometres, including two trips to the Arctic Circle, Marcelo Da Luz was forbidden by the Ontario government from driving his hand-built automobile on the province's roads, the only jurisdiction where he has faced such a prohibition.
But Da Luz doesn't mind. When the government told him he couldn't drive, he walked.
First, Da Luz used a special harness to pull the 250-kilogram car down gravel shoulders and across parking lots from Niagara Falls to Toronto, giving presentations along the way <a href=http://www.onlinehermesoutlet.com/hermes-passport-holder/97-hermes-compact-passport-holder-crocodile-leather-saddle-brown.html>Hermes Compact Passport Holder Crocodile Leather Saddle Brown</a> to raise awareness about the importance of environmental sustainability.
The idea behind this project was to challenge everyone to change something for 28 days to protect the environment, said the 44-year-old flight attendant.
Da Luz has relied on a network of volunteers to provide him with necessities and run the support car that drives alongside him.
It's been very challenging physically, especially the hills, he said. There was one day I quit many, many times but I just kept on pushing. I was always impressed by the people I met who helped me get through. It was so rewarding.
Even the mayor of Kemptville, Ont., got in on the project, Da Luz said, pulling the <a href=http://www.onlinehermesoutlet.com/hermes-picotin-herpicot/640-hermes-picotin-herpicot-bag-hot-pink-silver.html>Hermes Picotin Herpicot Bag Hot Pink silver</a> car for a few hundred metres when it passed through the town on May 24.
The solar car project is called the Power of One, and Da Luz said his message is simple.

Da Luz has been all over with his solar car. It first hit the pavement in 2008, and since then Da Luz has claimed a number of records, including the world distance record for a car powered entirely by the sun.
Powered by 893 solar cells, the car was designed and assembled by Da Luz and a small team. It has a top speed of 120 km/h, can accelerate from 0 to 85 km/h in six seconds, and has a range of up to 500 kilometres on a sunny day, according to Da Luz.

Just 20 kilometres from where he grew up is the town of Cubatao, once known as the most polluted place on Earth.
Da Luz said that one day when he was a child he asked his Grade 5 science teacher why adults pollute.
The teacher said, 'That's the price of progress,' he said. But I was never satisfied with that answer. I always thought there had to be a better way.
