Now that the elections are complete, while important in nature for certain, I feel that it is a good time to redirect the conversation to issues more locallybased. I would like to talk about the amount of littering that plagues our scenic roadways. Roadside litter is a huge problem throughout the area. As a bike rider throughout the region, state, and country, I know this firsthand. Traveling along at 1012 mph, litter is perhaps more obvious to me than to those going 50+ mph.
We live in one of the most beautiful places in the USA and we should all be willing to do our part to keep it that way. I pickup roadside detritus as I bike about but admittedly get quite frustrated when my panniers are "full up" before I have gotten even 3 or 4 miles down the road. I implore upon everyone to simply hold onto that trash, and toss it out at home not your vehicle's window. The effort on your part is trivial! When you do, it saves a tremendous amount effort on part of your fellow citizens, as well as great amounts of your taxmoney spent by the DOT on litter cleanup.

That said, I am certain that most of you have seen cans, bottles, cardboard boxes, plastic bags, candy wrappers, etc. while driving on our scenic roads or perhaps just outside your house, in your front yard. And if you walk these same roads, you would also see innumerable cigarette butts, packaging popcorn, and other smaller items. All of this detracts from the scenic beauty of our environment and reflects disrespect for the rest of us by those who casually discard trash from their vehicles. Other litter results from carelessness, particularly by those not complying with the law that requires the proper securing of loads of trash on their way to the County dump.
Lastly, before you simply dismiss me as just some treehugging, natureloving, bikeriding, hippyliberal consider this question: With tourism being the primary economic driver for this area, when is the last time you took your family on a vacation to visit somebody else's garbage dump?
