Becoming a game designer isn't just all fun and, well, games. In order to become a game designer you will first have to get an education in your field of choice. There are many schools that offer degree programs in this area, as it is very popular. However, there are a few things you should know before starting your education as a game designer. You will need to get at least a four year degree in your field of choice before you can become a game designer. If you want to be the top of your field, you should continue your education even beyond this level and go for a Master's degree, which can take up to six years depending on how many classes you take each semester. Many people get their four year degree first, obtain employment in their field, and then work on their Master's degree part time. If you want to be a programmer, you will go into an actual game design degree program. However, if you want to do the artwork, you will need a degree in creating digital graphic art. If you want to be able to do it all, a double major will be required. However, there is no need to be discouraged from getting an education by this fact. You should be able to get Pell grants and student loans that will help you pay for college. Many student loans are repayable only after you get out of school, so you do not have to worry about paying them back until you are working in your career. You can then get a job as a game designer and enjoy getting experience in your field while you repay your student loans in small, manageable payments.
