It's a little finnicky getting the LAN play to work, but it's not too bad once you figure it out once. You can message me if you need help in that regard.
I like Freeciv. It's moreoless a remake of Civilization 2. These days you can play in your browser, but there's a conventional downloadable client as well.

I can't think of any LAN games for Mac that describe what you're looking for, but there are many iOS games (iPhone and iPad) that fit the bill.
TripleA <is> an open source adaptation of Axis Allies made using Java . it allows users to play single player against an AI, or hotseat against other friends in the same room. It allows multiplayer on an online lobby, and also over email (PBEM) and network connections . is able to play the major versions of Axis and Allies: Classic, Revised, 50th Anniversary Edition, and Spring 1942. It also hosts many fan created maps, which have similar rules to Axis and Allies, but use a different setup or a different map or era altogether (like maps based on other conflicts, like World War 1 or Napoleon's conquests).

I would recommend Axis Allies, but it isn't available on Mac. However, according to the A wikipedia page:
Battle for Wesnoth is fun with two players. It's free and open source, and the Mac version is easy to install and looks pretty good. It's a turn based strategy game, so there's no time pressure.
