| Football History
BeginningThe earliest versions of football bore no resemblance to the game that you recognize today. Walter Camp's new set of rules developed in 1890 marked the beginning of American football as you know it today. For his contributions to the game, Camp is michael kors outlet store known as the father of American football. After nearly being shut down by the government because of excessive violence, the forward pass was created in 1905. The game became more organized as other people began getting involved. Legendary coaches Amos Alonzo Stagg, Pop Warner and Knute Rockne created the huddle and spread formations.
AFL and NFLWhat you know now as the most popular sports league in the world began in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association. The league was comprised of a few teams with a gentleman's agreement to play each other and crown a champion at the end of the season. In 1959, Lamar Hunt secured the first television contract for a new league by promising wide open offenses. The American Football League began competing for the best college players by paying more money than NFL owners were willing to pay. Joe Namath, the quarterback for the New York Jets, became the face of the league. By 1970, the two leagues had merged, forming one 26team league consisting of two conferences, the American Football Conference, made up of AFL teams, and the National Football Conference, made up of original NFL teams.
TelevisionThe first professional game broadcast live on television occurred in 1958 and became known as the "game of the century" between the Baltimore Colts and the New York Giants. The game also holds the distinction of being the first game decided in sudden death overtime, as the Colts won on a famous play that is shown on replays to this day. In 1968, in the midst of the AFLNFL merger, the Oakland Raiders were set to play the New York Jets. With one minute remaining in the game and the Jets leading, the television time allotted for the game ran out, and the network began its broadcast of the movie "Heidi." The Raiders came back to win, and fan protest was extensive enough to change the way NFL games were broadcast in the future.
DynastiesFans of modern football associate each decade with certain dominant teams. In the mid20th century, the service academies, Army and Navy, dominated college football. By the 1980s, Notre Dame was the preeminent program because of its television contract, guaranteeing that every game was televised nationally. This gave the school a significant boost in recruiting. As the game progressed through until today, most of the dominant programs are found in the southern part of the United States, where the fall and winter weather is mild compared to the harsh winters in the northern part of the country. Professionally, the Green Bay Packers dominated the 1960s NFL, winning the first two Super Bowls. In the 1970s, the Pittsburgh Steelers rose to power behind several future Hall of Famers. The San Francisco 49ers became dominant in the 1980s behind Joe Montana and Jerry Rice, arguably the best quarterback and wide receiver in league history. The 1990s saw the rise of the Dallas Cowboys with their young, brash stars. In the first decade of the 2000s, the game was dominated by the New England Patriots.
